Dr. Beth is one of the very few women you get to see in prison. When you first met, she told you that she is the only doctor in the infirmary, and that she is responsible for all of the inmates' health issues, big and small. Also, she leaves work at 5:30 p.m. sharp every day. After all, no one likes to work at night, especially in a prison. So if you want to see her, make sure you go to the infirmary at the right time.
While helping Dr. Beth "tidy up the desktop" on her computer, you accidentally opened her inbox and discovered some of her secrets:
Beth's boyfriend, Toby, recently cheated on her with her "best friend", Lilina. Betrayed by the two people she trusted most, Beth's love life has hit rock bottom.
Beth's love life never seems to be going well. She mentions in an email to her aunt that she recently broke up with her boyfriend, Toby. She goes on to say that in order to forget him for good, she changed the access code to the consultation room from Toby's birthday to her own birthday.
Beth's boyfriend, Toby, recently cheated on her with her "best friend", Lilina. Betrayed by the two people she trusted most, Beth's love life has hit rock bottom. But Beth is trying to move on. She mentioned in an email to her aunt that she has changed the access code to the consultation room from Toby's birthday to her own birthday. This may be proof that she is determined to get Toby out of her life once and for all.
Perhaps it was your sense of humor that brought some joy to Beth's boring work and made her feel for the first time in a long time that someone cares about her, so when you suddenly confessed your feelings to her, she didn't kick you out of the consultation room, but told you about her past.
Beth comes from a very well-to-do family. Her father is one of the executive directors of Hopps Biotech Group. However, he was always away on business, and Beth grew up without feeling any fatherly love. Her mother, a retired ballerina, had always been very strict with Beth. After her brother was born, her mother became even more distant.
Perhaps due to the lack of warmth from her family during childhood, Beth fell head over heels in love with Toby, her first boyfriend in college. His family was nowhere near as wealthy as Beth's, but his good looks and radiant smile were like a flame that melted Beth's frozen heart.
Her time with Toby was always filled with joy. Despite rumors that he had cheated on her multiple times, Beth thought that people only said those things because they were jealous. She could not bring herself to question the love she felt, as she already had their wedding and bright future planned out in her mind.
But the illusion shattered like glass one summer night.
It was a party before graduation. Toby drank too much and got into a brawl over some trivial matter. He caught the other man off guard and smashed his head open with a bottle. By the time Beth arrived at the scene, Toby had been arrested. He was subsequently sentenced to two years, to be served in Boulderton Prison.
Toby cried as he told Beth how sorry he was, hoping that she would forgive his recklessness and wait for his release. That night, Beth thought of her father, the father she had seen but a handful of times each year. She better than anyone understood the pain of being unable to see someone she loves. So Beth stubbornly refused the prestigious job that her father had arranged for her at Hopps Biotech, and instead sent her impressive resume to Boulderton Prison's infirmary, all so she could see Toby just a few more times a week.
Those two years were difficult, and Beth's relationship with her parents fell apart as a result of her decision. Without support from her family, she had to rely solely on her meager salary from the infirmary to survive. Following Toby's release, the two of them had to live in a tiny old apartment. But Beth still imagined that their future would gradually get better.
However, the reality of society is harsh; Toby's criminal record meant that he could not find a job, despite having a degree from a prestigious college and still in possession of his good looks. As time passed, Toby grew ever more impatient, and he would often try to persuade Beth to apologize to her parents and ask her father to pull some strings to give him a high-paying job at Hopps Biotech. Beth, however, could not bring herself to swallow her pride, as she knew exactly how her father would respond if she were to ask him such a thing.
Ever since then, there had been a gulf between the two of them. Toby would often fly into a rage and disappear for four or five days at a time. Whenever Beth asked him where he had been, his answer was always "Looking for work. What do you think?!" Of course Beth knew that he was not telling truth, but she could never have imagined just how terrible the truth could be.
It was a weekday afternoon, and Beth, feeling upset, left the prison to go home early. But as she passed the entrance to the movie theater down the block from her apartment, she saw Toby embracing a woman. As she looked closer, Beth was devastated to see that the woman was none other than Liliana, one of Beth's few friends.
That night, Beth threw Toby's things out onto the street and kicked him out of her life. But she could not banish him from her mind completely, as her stupid decision to become a prison doctor for him was branded into her memory.
A few days later, Beth returned to the prison infirmary. She did not quit her job. Perhaps she just did not want to admit that she only started working there for Toby, or maybe she did not want to hear her father's mocking I-told-you-so's. But deep down, she did not really know why.
"Maybe I just want to punish myself so I can teach that stupid, naive girl a lesson."
After hearing Beth's story, you had no idea how to comfort her. They say that everyone in prison is searching for their own salvation; maybe that's not only true of the inmates.
Agree to DateSo when she hesitantly suggested that she wanted to be "good friends" first, you agreed, as you know how much courage it took for her to open up about her past, and how much trust she has in you.
Hopefully she won't regret this decision.
Reject RelationshipSo when she hesitantly suggested that she wanted to be "good friends" first, you declined. Only you know why you made that choice. Maybe it was because of her, or maybe it was because of yourself.
"Thank you for thinking of me."
