The Devil is the beast that Gomez trained in the circus, and his partner on stage. Although you heard all about the Devil's ferocity from Gomez's stories, you are still surprised when you see for yourself that he is a great white shark.
The Devil was originally set to be euthanized for biting off an audience member's head one bloody night, but Gomez sacrificed his freedom to protect him. After that, the Devil lived in Hadlow River next to the prison until Gomez opened his barbershop.
The basement of the barbershop is connected by a pipe to the old Tear Lake Fortress. Able to navigate this secret waterway with ease, the Devil became the barbershop's courier. Every day, he swims up and down Hadlow River, transporting the junk purchased by the barbershop and exchanging it for whatever Gomez needs.
When you learn about the underground waterway that leads out of the prison, your mind immediately leaps to thoughts of escape. But Gomez tells you that the long-submerged ruins of the fortress are an underwater labyrinth, and that without the Devil as a guide, you have no hope of making it out alive. If you want the Devil to guide you, you will have to become his friend. But is it possible to make friends with a shark?
